Nestled in the heart of Tanzania, a monumental movement is gradually unfolding, its goal to revolutionize the landscape of women entrepreneurs. The impetus behind this empowering shift is the formidable Maida Waziri, the current President of VOWET (Voice of Women Entrepreneurs in Tanzania) and the architect of the pioneering #SheCanDoIt campaign.
In an in-depth interview, Ms. Waziri spoke to goldenwoman.org candidly about the campaign, the inspiration behind it, its immediate goals, and her long-term aspirations for the women of Tanzania.
Q: Ms. Waziri, can you give us some insights into the genesis and the ultimate goal of the #SheCanDoIt campaign?
A: Absolutely. The #SheCanDoIt campaign is fundamentally an initiative birthed out of VOWET with a singular mission – to advance the cause of women in business, by not just empowering them, but by changing the narratives around them. Our ultimate goal is to spotlight women’s inherent potential and the significant strides they can make in the commercial landscape. Our vision stretches across both urban and rural areas, to instill courage in women, compelling them to assume consequential roles within their respective communities.
Q: This is a highly commendable endeavor. But what was the key motivation behind the #SheCanDoIt campaign?
A: Having been a woman entrepreneur myself, I have experienced first-hand the multitude of obstacles and challenges that women in business often face. However, I firmly believe that within every woman lies the potential to achieve extraordinary feats. All she requires is the conviction in her abilities, and access to the right resources to unlock this potential. The #SheCanDoIt campaign is our clarion call, a determined initiative to boost women’s confidence and empower them to overcome their business hurdles.
Q: Could you delve into the specific ways this campaign will facilitate the support for women?
A: The #SheCanDoIt campaign has multiple, intertwined strands of focus. At its core, we emphasize education, capacity building, and networking. We aspire to equip women with the essential tools, knowledge, and support necessary to initiate and grow their businesses. In doing so, we plan to foster a vibrant community of women entrepreneurs who can provide mutual support and share invaluable experiences.
Q: Dodoma seems to be a significant aspect of this campaign. Could you explain its importance in your vision?
A: Indeed, Dodoma plays a central role in our campaign. As the capital city and the hub of administrative power in Tanzania, Dodoma holds a treasure trove of opportunities across an array of sectors, be it agriculture, retail, real estate, manufacturing, or technology. We encourage women to seize these opportunities, invest and expand their entrepreneurial endeavors within Dodoma. The #SheCanDoItDodoma initiative will particularly concentrate on illuminating over 100 unique economic opportunities for women in the region.
Q: Lastly, what would be your message to all the aspiring and current women entrepreneurs?
A: To every woman who harbors entrepreneurial aspirations, my message is simple yet emphatic – believe in your potential and do not be daunted by the hurdles that may arise on your path. Our nation’s first woman President, her excellency Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, is a beacon of inspiration to all Tanzanian women. Her achievements are a living testament that anything is possible if you set your mind to it. Embrace challenges, don’t let any setbacks dishearten you. With unyielding determination, resilience, and the right network of support, you can establish successful businesses, make noteworthy contributions to our national economy, and leave an enduring legacy for future generations.
